We’re all looking for that winter style that looks chic and effortless rather than vaguely lumberjack. During the colder months, many of us may be seeking a low-effort look with minimal accessories while still embracing the essentials: a good hat, warm gloves, everyday boots, and solid outerwear.
Here are a few tips on how to accomplish that!
First of all, remember that a capsule wardrobe for any season should be made up of the clothing and accessories you feel the most comfortable wearing. Crafting a capsule isn’t the time to step out of your comfort zone and try a new style. If you’re most comfortable with a relaxed, casual look, then you’re going to create your capsule around those items.
Alternatively, you might feel more at home in fancier formal attire, and that’s cool too! Just make sure every item is well-loved because you don’t want to hang onto things you don’t feel good about. (However, if you do need more space for an expanded wardrobe or your capsules for other seasons, you’ll appreciate the walk-in closets at The Pointe - Hilliard Apartments!)
A warm jacket
If you really want to commit to a capsule, one jacket with a removable shell that can double as two jackets offers both a warmer and lighter-weight option depending on the weather. But if you live in the midwest, a two-jacket capsule wardrobe is completely understandable. A longer-length wool coat along with a waterproof parka can both definitely come in handy.
A few basic button-downs or base layers
The classic button-down top is suitable for any gender and depending on the pattern and color, can coordinate well with most of your wardrobe. If you’re not the button-down type, consider other styles that will keep you warm in the winter. A basic black or white t-shirt, thermal base layer, or turtleneck can be worn under a jacket or blazer. For a more feminine style, try a popover, partial button-down, tunic, or textured blouse.
Knit pullovers
The idea behind the capsule wardrobe is that each item can be worn with everything else, so your tops should be in neutral enough shades that they’ll coordinate well with everything. However, they don’t need to be solid colors. A neutral plaid or stripe knit pullover works well too!
A hoodie, cardigan, or fleece for extra coziness
Whether you work remotely or outside of the home, you’re going to want comfortable, cozy attire that you can wear all winter. A fleece, hoodie, or cozy cardigan offers some insulation, and there are styles to fit everyone.
Favorite relaxed jeans
Denim is a staple in every season. A comfortable pair of jeans can be dressed up or dressed down and best of all, the longer you own them, the better they feel and the softer they get!
Basic trousers or utility pants
These pants can be more formal, or a more casual style of cargo pants, and they can be in any shade that coordinates well with the rest of your capsule. Whether it’s black, gray, or a lighter cream, beige, or tan, they can coordinate with your fleece, knits, and button-downs, and can be dressed up or dressed down depending on the occasion.
Winter boots
Living in the midwest, you probably already understand the importance of a good winter boot, especially if you do a lot of walking outdoors. Many people like a boot that’s waterproof and has enough tread to get you safely across a slushy street or parking lot but still looks sharp enough to wear indoors with a variety of ensembles.
Accessories
Again, the idea is to have versatile pieces that are functional and coordinate well with almost everything. Jewelry, whether it’s earrings or a wristwatch, is more flexible since you likely have some items you save for special occasions. Don’t forget a functional scarf, hat, and gloves! If you commute, think about whether you need driving gloves that grip or just something to keep your hands warm.
