Easy ways to rearrange your apartment

Rearranging things in your apartment is a great way to make your home feel like new no matter how long you’ve lived there. And because even the most spacious apartments can begin to look cluttered after some time, it’s a good idea to take stock every once in a while and determine how the space meets your changing needs. Here are some easy ways to rearrange your apartment without doing a complete overhaul.

Freshen up your floors. Swapping out your flooring covers is a great way to transform a room. Use rugs to “anchor” different spaces, to transition from one space to another, or to create a boundary between them. Don’t be afraid to put a rug over carpet, or even to stack them. We layer our clothes during the winter, why not our rugs? Apartment Therapy has some great photos of rooms that nail the layered rug look

Think beyond the current arrangement, and create space with intention. Maybe your apartment arrangement feels pretty basic but you’re not sure how or where to reposition your larger furniture pieces. You can break a large space up into smaller chunks and determine a purpose for those spaces. Think about how you’ll use them (reading, work, storage, etc) and place only the items in that space that serve your purpose.

Restyle your walls.  WallApp is - you guessed it! - a wall app that allows you to design a digital mockup of your wall before you start hanging photos and frames. You can experiment with different configurations and make changes without hammering new holes in the wall.

Consider where you spend most of your time, and prioritize that space. It might be a workstation, the couch in front of the television, or a cozy reading nook by a sunny window. Whatever that space may be, you can take a good look at what arrangements could make it more functional.

Play around with floor plan apps before you start moving furniture. Room Scan Pro for iOS and Floor Plan Creator for Android are apps that allow you to create a floor plan using your smartphone.

Rearrange items by color. You don’t have to paint the walls to create a color palette for each room. You can use your apartment neutrals to your advantage and accent with lively textures and patterns without making the room look too busy. Start small by creating a display using just one or two specific colors. Check out the black and yellow elements on this nightstand for inspiration.

Quick furniture tricks: Don’t push furniture all the way back against the wall. According to Better Homes & Gardens, this can actually make a room feel more cramped. Cozy furniture arrangements in the middle of a room make conversation easier and creates the illusion of greater depth. For a more dramatic change, go ahead and put your bed in front of the window!
